Discovery Of Love/Discovery Of Romance review

A drama with a simple and straight forward story: A women that is happy with her current boyfriend starts to really understand love when her ex boyfriend suddenly appears back into her life. I personally think the drama made a bold statement when they state that they are trying to convey the true meaning of love and the synopsis of the drama sounds a little silly. (well, Marriage Not Dating sounded sillier and I still did loved it dearly)

I really like the drama posters, i find it pretty cute and creative. I wasn't expecting much from the drama since the story sounds pretty silly but it definitely exceeded my expectations and turn out to be a great drama, I think the drama did a good job in handling this kind of story since it can easily turn out to be a complete messy disaster. I love the tone and mood of the drama, I think the pacing is really well done too (Although I think some people might dislike the pace since the story seems to go nowhere at times) I completely understand the viewer ratings for the drama since dramas with this type of themes usually do badly in ratings (The drama did really really well for online ratings so it's a good thing), the drama feels more tvn which is a good thing since it's breezy and fun. (The writer did the I Need Romance series on tvn so i guess that explains)

THE CHARACTER

Jung Yoo Mi as Han Yeo Reum
Han Yeo Reum is a furniture designer/maker/carpenter? She is in a happy relationship with Ha Jin (Sung Joon) for around a year and is at the stage of considering marriage, she becomes more experienced and smarter in dealing with dating ever since her failed 5 years relationship with Tae Ha (Eric). She used to be those girls that put 101% in a relationship while the guy doesn't exactly realise and appreciate so she changed after her first failed relationship, she still put in loads of effort but she learn to do it in a smarter way. *claps* The story revolves around Yeo Reum and her feelings, she is a really realistic character, she is partly bitchy, mean, direct but she is also sincere, considerate and a strong character, I really appreciate writers that don't make their characters a perfect angel (you'know all nice, kind, smiles everyday even though she's being punched in the face), realistic characters are good since it's much more relatable and most girls in real life have a little bitchiness in them anyway.  -AND DID I MENTION THAT YEO REUM KISSES HA JIN WHO IS THE SECOND LEAD MORE THAN TAE HA? HOW OFTEN DO YOU SEE THE SECOND LEAD GET MORE KISSES but well, the fact that she has much more chemistry with Tae Ha is undeniable so I automatically support Tae Ha despite him being a idiot most of the times-
This is my second time watching Jung Yoo Mi but first time in a television role, I watched her in Silenced where she has little screen time since the attention are mostly on the children and Gong Yoo (THAT MOVIE WAS REALLY GOOD), she is gorgeous but a tad bit too skinny, she did a good job as Yeo Reum especially towards the end where she portrayed the messy and conflicting emotions Yeo Reum is feeling. I really like Jung Yoo Mi after this and definitely want to see more of her in drama land.

Eric as Kang Tae Ha
Tae Ha is not exactly the definition of a gentleman since he acts like a childish ass-hole most of the time but he gets really serious and fierce when it comes to work. (A guy who is serious at work is cute) He was in a five year relationship with Yeo Reum but they broke up eventually due to circumstances (Honestly, nobody was at fault for the breakup since it was due to time so i really like the reason behind the breakup since it's much better than making the characters break up due to stuff like cheating, financial conflicts since it's too typical in drama land) Tae Ha took Yeo Reum for granted at times since she seems to put in more effort in their relationship so Tae Ha doesn't exactly learn to appreciate but after meeting her again years later after their break up, he finally realises the true meaning of love and finally learns to truly love and appreciate Yeo Reum, (Better late than never i guess?)
Eric isn't my definition of handsome since I find him quite weird looking at first haha but i do like him and find him really cute as the story goes on. He is a pretty solid actor and doesn't give the idol actor feel at all (partially because he has been acting for around 10 years and he is much older than most idols)

Sung Joon as Nam Ha Jin
Ha Jin is Yeo Reum's current boyfriend, he is a really nice guy and almost a A* boyfriend that treats his girlfriend like a queen but yet doesn't spoil her completely. He is a plastic surgeon that has a pretty good family background, he remains nice throughout the whole drama which is heartbreaking at times because he doesn't deserve to be treated that way but well, it's a drama. I really appreciate how the writer didn't suddenly make him turn evil or crazy just to justify the leading lady's actions (for example, I Miss You made Yoo Seung Ho suddenly turn crazy to make Yoon Eun Hye's action understandable), something that made the drama pairing successful is that no matter how much more skinship the drama gave Ha Jin and Yeo Reum, she still sparks and have more chemistry with Tae Ha which lead to me automatically being on Tae Ha side despite liking Ha Jin.
Sung Joon's fans must be screaming in pain seeing him hurt this way but it''s just a drama. right? Sung Joon doesn't look 32 at all despite Ha Jin being 32 (He is only around 24 years old in real life....), I don't know why they decided to cast 24 year old young Sung Joon for a 32 year old role but it doesn't hurt seeing him more on screen haha. Sung Joon is quite underated honestly, he has quite a few acting projects under his belt and played multiple leading roles in cable dramas (Can We Get Married, I Need Romance 3, Shut Up Flower Boy Band) but I only watched him in supporting roles in Gu Family Book and Lie To Me, I can't say I'm completely impressed with him but he is a really good actor considering his age, he just need a right role that can shoot him into bigger stardom.

Kim Seul Gi as Yoon Sol
Yoon Hyun Min as Do Joon Ho
I'm going to talk about these two together since their characters practically belong together and I don't want to type so much haha. Yoon Sol, Joon Ho and Yeo Reum lives together as their parents are friends so when Joon Ho's parents go overseas, these three childhood friends stay together in a cute two level house. Joon Ho is a plastic surgeon and also Ha Jin's friend (He introduced Ha Jin to Yoon Sol initially but Yeo Reum ended up being attracted to Ha Jin instead), Yoon Sol works as a furniture designer/maker/carpenter? together with Yeo Reum and they started their own mini workshop. Yoon Sol and Joon Ho have been friends since young so they don't see each other as anything more than oppa-dongseng (pardon my spelling if it's wrong), they do almost everything in front of each other and talk about almost everything *Yes, Reply Me 1997's relationship* Joon Ho and Yoon Sol doesn't have any further feelings for each other until one day when Joon Ho suddenly fell a little for Yoon Sol heh THEY ARE SUPER ADORABLE, the people around them didn't expect them to fall for each other except for Tae Ha. I LOVE THESE TWO, they are cute individually and are great friends to Yeo Reum but they are even better together.
Kim Seul Gi is making a big name for herself, she has luck with getting great characters, from the panda-eye webtoon writer in Flower Boy Next Door to the mermaid friend in Surplus Princess and now as the extremely adorable friend here, despite her only getting supporting roles, she shines so brightly in her characters that it manage to leave a deep impression all the time. I can definitely see her as a leading lady for a rom com on tvn since that's more of her style. I've never seen Yoon Hyun Min anywhere else, but he certainly caught my attention now, whoever that cast Kim Seul Gi and Hyun Min together did a great job since the two actors give out a similar vibe and feeling and are both amazing.

RELATIONSHIPS
As the title suggests, Discovery Of Love is a drama about discovering love so the writer explored three types of relationship in this drama with the characters.

1. The Reply Me 1997 relationship
As stated above, the two characters have the long term friend to couple relationship as seen in dramas like Reply Me 1997, In Time With You. I love how their relationship is written and it is true that long term friends can suddenly fall for each other although it is rare.

2. The Puppy Love relationship
Yes I am aware that this isn't exactly puppy love since they are both grown adults (22 years old) when they started their relationship but it was their first relationship so it was all innocent, cute and bubbly. Their relationship here is cute and long lasting (5 years!!!!!!!!), Yeo Reum put loads of effort in that relationship, she was patient and tried her best to support Tae Ha, Tae Ha was also young and did put in effort into their relationship but he didn't try as hard and he didn't appreciate Yeo Reum enough so he kind of took Yeo Reum's love for granted. Maintaining a five year relationship isn't easy since people drift away so their relationship in the drama portrayed a long five year but young relationship well since it pointed out problems like, having not enough time for each other due to work as at that age, most people are still trying to achieve something out of their career so they may not have time for a relationship and problems like drifting apart and lack of excitement in their relationship since all humans get sick of stuff quite easily so a long relationship is hard to maintain since it feels too comfortable and boring since you know your partner too well.

3. Love At First Sight relationship
Yeo Reum and Ha Jin fall in love within 3 seconds and have been together for a year. They are comfortable around each other and have a healthy and strong relationship, Ha Jin is different from Tae Ha since Ha Jin is a really nice guy so Yeo Reum doesn't need to work as hard to keep their relationship going since Ha Jin is putting in loads of effort too. Yeo Reum and Ha Jin are both 32 years old so their relationship is much more mature and with the goal of marriage in mind. This kind of relationships do exist in real life but what are the chances of finding someone like Ha Jin? Almost 0.

  • Synopsis

A story about a woman who is having conflict between new love and old love.
There is a woman who has just started her new relationship, but her ex-boyfriend is back regretting his past. This is a love triangle story of three young people

    FROM DRAMAWIKI

The fact that this drama aims to be realistic already makes it special from the usual dramas we see, I think the drama did a good job in handling the relationships in the drama and the characters are really realistic so it's a big plus point. The drama seems to be going round and round at times but the writer always seems to know what she wants at the end and gives me a impression that the story and the writer herself is really smart to handle the drama the way she did. The drama shows a lot about relationships and definitely did teach viewers more about romance (Mission Accomplished?), love is sacrifice and effort but of course it isn't like other dramas where the leads sacrifice their life, their company, their family, their assets.....in real life, the sacrifice needed in our society are simply stuff like using your phone less and spending more time with the person you love, play less video games and even stuff like sacrificing what you want to eat and follow what your partner wants instead.
I feel that the drama's relationship and love triangle is similar to I Miss You's (Yoon Eun Hye and Yoo Chun's drama) but of course watching this love triangle is much better than watching that drama filled with the leading cast crying non stop.

    IN CONCLUSION
Despite all the nice things I have to say about this drama, it has it flaws but it isn't easy to write a drama with such a simple theme and a realistic drama (It's much easier to write a drama about flying donkeys) so I have to give this drama credit for exceeding expectations. *Jung Yoo Mi and Eric adds to the list of 2014 drama couple reunion since they worked together in Que Sera Sera which I never watched but it did receive a lot of love from viewers, sadly, their reunion wasn't as highly anticipated as compared to the rest since Que Sera Sera didn't exactly do well in viewer ratings but their chemistry is definitely still there*
Realistic, fun and cute but I don't think guys will enjoy this since it's mainly written with capturing female audience in mind but most female audience should enjoy this.
