Birth Of A Beauty Review

Birth Of A Beauty seems like a mixture of several dramas/movies mixed together in one, from the ever popular movie 200 Pounds Beauty to the super long daily drama Cruel Temptation. The drama has the formula for success, it was entertaining, fun, light hearted despite being a revenge drama, funny which seems enough for it to do well in ratings but sadly, it faced strong competition from MBC and only manage to do decent which is quite a pity considering the fact that it's the type of drama the general public will enjoy.

Birth Of A Beauty received quite some attention before it's premiere since it is the drama comeback for Han Ye Seul after three years because she ran away to the states while filming her last drama due to stress haha well as much as it was her fault but the korea drama live shooting system is really stressful and hard especially since hers was a action drama but many other actress go through the same thing too so it's no excuse *shrugs*
Birth of A Beauty started of confusing and a little messy for my liking (too much confusion happened in simply just the first episode) but as it goes on I started to like it more and more till the point of loving it towards the end. Many may disagree with me since I saw many people saying they fell in love with it from episode one and never stopped loving the drama, the drama is full of bullshit and nonsensical plot but I choose to ignore it since I am completely aware of how nonsensical it is before watching and choose to simply accept it. Nonsensical dramas once in a while are fun but not all the time, the drama doesn't have logic nor is anywhere near reality but well, it's a drama after all.

THE CHARACTERS

Han Ye Seul as Sara/Sa Geum Ran
Sa Geum Ran used to be an severely overweight and not-very-good-looking ajhumma housewife, she married her husband when his family was poor and needed help but now his whole family and her husband is doing extremely well overseas so she hasn't seen her husband for 6 years (pardon me if I remembered wrongly) She gets treated like a Cinderella at home (her husband's sisters and mother keeps on making her do the chores while they have fun and is kind of mean to her) but she continues to be strong for the sake of her husband whom she thinks love her. Her life gets completely screwed up when she finds out that her husband have been cheating on her so she took the chance to have her whole body done by plastic surgery, changing herself completely to become Sara with the help of Han Tae Hee. (Joo Sang Wook)
Han Ye Seul did a decent job here, I've never seen her act before but have heard that her acting is pretty much at the average level, I think she did better than average here. She portrayed Sara nicely but sometimes did make her seem like a bimbo.... (no offense intended but that's just what I felt). It's usually dangerous when the drama labels someone as Miss Korea or someone really gorgeous since it may cause disagreement from the public (I did hear people saying HYS is ugly..) but I personally think Han Ye Seul IS one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen so she fits the title of a gorgeous, breath taking women well, she looks great in every single scene in the drama and her clothes are so pretty. (I WANT HER WARDROBE PLEASE)

Joo Sang Wook as Han Tae Hee
Han Tae Hee is literally the perfect guy you can ever find, but obviously this kind of perfection probably don't exist in real life. He is supporting, romantic, forgiving, cute, understanding, sincere, he fell in love with Sara but manage to make himself fall in love with her before plastic surgery self Sa Geum Ran too, he does everything he can to make Sara happy and he tries to make himself a better person when he realise how perfect Sara is. Han Tae Hee was the one that saved Sa Geum Ran and helped her get plastic surgery and her revenge done but in the process he fell in love with the women he created (he designed her surgery from head to toe so it's kind of his creation and he did teach her how to change her personality so she can take her revenge) *additional reason why he is perfect: he buys her pretty and expensive clothes to wear and dresses her up like a princess*
Han Tae Hee actually reminds me so much of the real life Joo Sang Wook I saw on Running Man which is a good thing since it's cute, adorable and silly haha. I've seen Joo Sang Wook twice in roles similar to Han Tae Hee, in Feast Of The Gods and Cunning Single Lady but well I don't mind seeing it again since it's just simply cute and never annoying. I think Joo Sang Wook did well here, he manage to give a consistent good performance throughout and made everyone absolutely adore Han Tae Hee.

Jung Gyu Woon as Lee Kang Joon
In almost every revenge story there will be a evil ex husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend and in Birth Of A Beauty, we have a evil ex husband that attempts to kill his wife after she refuse to divorce with him. I didn't actually hate Lee Kang Joon as much as I thought I will, which I think is a good thing because it save me from some not needed misery for hating a character that doesn't exist in my life LOL it's painful and tiring to hate someone you don't even know. (I don't know how I endured through those long and irritating daily dramas where almost everyone is evil)
I was pretty upset when I hear that Jung Gyu Woon will be playing the evil ex husband because I do love him ever since History Of A Salaryman and I wish he gets better roles but I am happy to see him back in drama land again. JUNG GYU WOON PERFORMANCE HERE WAS SO FREAKING GOOD, he did so well I can't find any flaws so it is painful to see his performance here not recognized at all, he's performance here is actually the strongest and he improved a whole lot ever since he past performance.

Wang Ji Hye as Gyo Chae Yun
Gyo Chae Yun is the women Lee Kang Joon is having a affair with, she is a well loved TV host and also the step sister of Han Tae Hee. (Han Tae Hee kind of loved her) I can't exactly say she's evil since I didn't hate her too (I honestly can't make myself actually dislike anyone from the show...) but she is a bitch, she shamelessly stole Sa Guem Ran's husband but other than that and the words she used, she isn't exactly worth hating haha.
Wang Ji Hye did a good acting job too, I hate to say this but I honestly feel that the two secondary leads did the strongest acting among the whole cast. I do like the clothes WJH wore throughout the drama too, especially the black open back dress she wore during an event.

    FROM DRAMAWIKI

Sure the drama was full of flaws, from the absurd storyline to awkward beginning but the drama was entertaining if you overlook the flaws. I absolutely adore the directing here, it was really well done and the pacing was well done too since I did enjoy the story as a whole. It's exciting to see a women restart her previous messed up life and become a completely different amazing person and get a second chance at love. The revenge part in the drama is also not over done to the extend that it was irritating and stupid but instead the drama chooses to focus on making it a romantic comedy more which is a plus point for me. Honestly, if the script is being made into a movie, I think it will actually sell well since it's the type of storyline that suits the taste of many people and it's fun.
*PS WATCH THE RUNNING MAN EPISODE WHERE THE CAST APPEARED AS THE GUEST, IT WAS SUPER CUTE*

    IN CONCLUSION
This deserves more attention and love.
