Family Dramas Review (all)

I choose to make a long post about all the family drama I've watched because some dramas are really so bad that it doesn't deserve my time to write a long review and I've watched many of them quite some time ago so it's going to be quite hard for me to remember everything and write a long full review.
My definition (keyword is MY) of a family drama are dramas above 50 episodes that are shown usually on a weekend timeslot or daily whether it's in the morning or at night. Family dramas usually carries nonsensical storyline that makes you want to pull your hair out in frustration, for example birth secrets, secret identity, evil second leads, evil mothers or mother in law, ex boyfriend/girlfriend back to ruin your life, illogical revenge. I'm not a fan of long dramas because I get frustrated and irritated real easily whether by the characters or the never ending story but my mum only watches family dramas so since she's watching, I always watch together with her because well, there are some that are quite enjoyable and entertaining. I HAVE NEVER WATCHED A FAMILY DRAMA ON MY OWN because I rather spend that time watching 2-3 prime time dramas instead but recently, a few weekend dramas with 50 episodes have caught my eye so i'm going to give it a try soon after I finish my long list of dramas I need to catch up with having to take a hiatus due to exams.
*PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCORE I GIVE IS SLIGHTLY HIGHER THAN WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS BECAUSE I DON'T USE THE SAME SCORING SYSTEM AS THE OTHER DRAMAS BECAUSE I TEND TO ENJOY FAMILY DRAMAS LESS SO IF THERE'S ONE THAT I REALLY LIKE MY SCORE WILL BE QUITE HIGH SO MY SCORING SYSTEM FOR THIS POST IS DIFFERENT SO PLEASE DO NOT COMPARE IT WITH THE OTHER DRAMAS OUT OF THIS POST*

- Jang Bo Ri Is Here

8.5/10
8/10
This drama is definitely the definition of crazy but strangely it's so ridiculous and dumb and irritating, it became an addiction. The drama started off slow and boring but as it goes on and as the evil Min Jung (played by Lee Yoo Ri) starts getting more evil, it became strangely annoying but addictive. I really wish that I didn't get addicted to it but I did, the drama is super ridiculous and cringe worthy but I liked it.... I DID..... Lee Yoo Ri definitely stole the show but Oh Yeon Seo was good too (Why is she getting criticize for this...?) Dumb drama but satisfying in an irritating way. (I have to admit the ending was a huge win)

- Wang's Family/King's family
8.5/10
8/10

  • Title: 왕가네 식구들 / Wanggane Shikgoodeul
  • Also known as: The Wang Family / Family of King / Royal Family / King's Family
  • Genre: Family, romance, comedy, melodrama
  • Episodes: 50
  • Broadcast network: KBS2
  • Broadcast period: 2013-Aug-31 to 2014-Feb-16
  • Air time: Saturday & Sunday Night 19:55

  • Synopsis

The Wang family faces a number of challenges: elitism; discrimination; children moving back home after living on their own during colleges; the power dynamics between husband, wife and family; and decisions about when to marry and have a baby given the financial difficulties in today's Korean society. The first daughter had married into a well-off family, but after they went bankrupt she and the family had to move back to her parents' home. The second daughter is also having financial difficulties as her husband is jobless, while the third daughter suddenly decided to quit her job. How will the family manage to survive such obstacles?

Personal Comments: I'm going to break this into parts that are well done and parts that are badly done.
WELL DONE: 1. The cast is huge BUT everyone seems to get enough and sufficient screen time and their own story so they don't get overshadowed throughout it's 50 episodes long run.
    2. Relationship built up pretty decently
    3. Acceptable humour which makes it easier to watch (I have to admit that the show made me laugh a whole lot)
    4. The otp couple (3rd daughter's) looks great together with good chemistry
    5. The supporting characters are super memorable (Uncle, Uncle's wife etc)
    6. The pacing is considered acceptable
    7. Realistic to some point
    8. The characters all managed to redeem themselves so i hated them, started to liked them and end up loving them.
    9. Acting was super solid, Oh Man Suk and Lee Tae Ran's acting certainly stands out but honestly, the whole cast did well.

NOT WELL DONE: 1.Irritating and unreasonable characters annoyed me badly
    2. The otp couple has such great chemistry and potential in the beginning but became a mess, the characters both manage to irritate me in one way or another and I ended up not caring much about them.
    3. The ending few episodes were hard to watch (last few episodes made me lose interest)
    4. Story becomes a little silly sometimes (but i did like and appreciate it's silliness too)

Overall, i did enjoy it despite it's flaws. It was irritating and fun to watch at the same time.

    - Mr Oh Is Coming/Oh Ja Ryong Is Coming
    8.5/10
    8.5/10

  • Genre: Family, romance
  • Episodes: 129
  • Broadcast network: MBC

  • Air time: Monday to Friday 19:15

  • Synopsis

Family drama about the 'reversal' of two son-in-laws. The older son-in-law (Jin Tae Hyun) married his wife (Seo Hyun Jin) because of her family's fortune while the younger son-in-law (Lee Jang Woo) honestly loves his wife (Oh Yeon Seo). The story is about the younger son-in-law, who is jobless, saving his wife's family from ruin by his scheming older brother-in-law.

Personal Comments: Despite it having some common irritating aspects of family dramas, it is actually much more easier than smoother to watch than other daily dramas. I didn't find the acting a strong point of the drama but i did like the main couple (Lee Jang Woo and Oh Yeon Seo), they were reportedly dating while filming but broke up before it ended *ouch*, although the news was denied by Lee Jang Woo's agency but well, there's a drama behind this drama. Lee Jang Woo was cute, Oh Yeon Seo was likeable and i didn't find her over acting like what others have stated. Honestly if you are thinking about watching family dramas, stick to weekend dramas instead, daily dramas can bore you easily.

Her life is turned upside down due to someone's mistake, and she faces numerous setbacks on the road to recovery.
Personal Comments: main plot of the story: switch at birth. I initially enjoyed the first few episodes but it started to went downhill and became a big huge mess. I love the main lead character portrayed by Kim Hyun Joo but slowly she started to annoy me *sorry*. I was hopping for something much more after hearing so many positive reviews and I even heard that it's better than master sun (yes i really heard that.....), sorry i just can't seem to like this show. I love Lee Yoori eversince her melo revenge drama Yellow Boots/Ice Adonis and she's probably the only good thing about this show with the other second main lead, Kang Dong Ho. Lee Yoori looks gorgeous in the show ( except the front because she has to be the poor girl and no, poor girl can't look pretty *logic* ) . I can't say the show is bad because my mum enjoyed it and many others too but maybe it's not my cup of tea *shrugs*
    - Moon And Stars For You

Family is like a haven to us. We love them even to pick the stars and the moon for them. In this drama, a family, whose members are all scattered away due to the conflicts, comes to realize that it’s each other that will best protect them from hardships.
Seo Jin Woo is a surgeon who has a trauma from his younger days that causes surgery phobia, Han Chae Won works in food research and deeply in love of Jin Woo, and the ambitious Kyung Joo who abandoned Jin Woo to choose Min Hyuk. Together, they depicts the story of love and hate.

Personal Comments: One of the better family daily dramas around (to me at least), not only the cast looks super good together, the story line is more realistic, cute and fun to watch than others (less irritating too), lastly the character's fashion in this show was really good, in family dramas you seldom see great fashion throughout the whole drama and on most of the characters. I really love the pretty cast and the script, its heartwarming, realistic, cute and fun to watch. The reason why I gave this show much more credit than the rest is also mainly because of it being much less irritating, it's not addicting nor worth watching if you don't have the time though.

    - Queen Seon Deok
    6/10
    8.5/10

    • Title: 선덕여왕 (善德女王) / Seondeok Yeo Wang
    • Also known as: Queen Seon Duk
    • Tagline: The one who secures the people will acquire the world and rule the ages
    • Genre: Historical Drama
    • Episodes: 62
    • Broadcast network: MBC

    • Air time: Monday & Tuesday 21:55

    Synopsis

Deokman was born a twin but was abandoned as a baby and sent to a place far away by her father, King Jinpyeong in order to protect her from being killed by an influenced royal court lady, Mishil who tries to snatch away the throne from the royal successor. Deokman was later brought back to the Silla palace, where she joined forces with her twin sister Princess Cheonmyong to oppose Mishil. However, Mishil devised sinister plans to have the two Silla princesses exiled from the kingdom, and in a secretive battle, Princess Cheonmyong was accidentally killed. But Princess Deokman shrewdly enlisted the help of General Kim Yusin and eliminated her archenemy Mishil. She then became Queen Seon Deok, the first female ruler of the Silla kingdom. This drama is about a story of a beautiful queen, who has to give up her love to save the people and thus, leaving behind many brilliant achievements.

Personal Comments: Star studded cast, with many familiar faces such as Yoo Seung Ho (I miss you), Lee Yo Won (49 Days), Kim Nam Gil (Shark, Bad Guy), Uhm Tae Woong (Dr Champ), After School's Uee, Lee Hyun Woo (To the beautiful you), just to name a few. Acting was a huge hit and a big fat yes but story pacing was slow. I wasn't a fan of saguek at all in the past so when I watched this, I just wanted to press the fast forward button and never stop, but slowly I did come to liking saguek after dramas like Sungkyunkwan Scandal. I wouldn't exactly recommend long saguek dramas to newbies because the lengthy and complicated story and dialogues can become a pain in the ass to watch but if you really want to watch them, you can start with shorter saguek series like Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Moon Embracing The Sun and Empress Ki just to name a few.

     -Yellow Boots
    9/10
    8/10
  • Title: 노란 복수초 / Noran Boksoocho

  • Genre: Melodrama
  • Episodes: 108
  • Broadcast network: tvN
  • Broadcast period: 2012-Feb-27 to 2012-Aug-30
  • Air time: Monday to Thursday 9:45

  • Synopsis

"Yellow Boots" is a drama about the revenge of a woman who lost everything after being framed for a crime

Personal Comments: Revenge dramas are largely seen even in prime time timeslots these days, but the difference between prime time revenge dramas and long revenge dramas is that the long ones are much more complete and you get to see the full process and yes revenge is sweet. Yellow Boots is a rare drama that I thoroughly enjoyed throughout it's long run, Lee Yoori was a big part of my enjoyment, I like her character and her as an actress. The story pacing was quite well done considering the fact that I didn't get bored throughout and as much as revenge dramas not making logical sense, this drama did make a little more sense than the rest. Overall, a great drama if you enjoyed Secret Love (the one with Ji Sung), it has a similar background minus the obsessive weird romance haha
    - Dong Yi
    9/10
    9/10
    • Title: 동이 (同伊) / Dong Yi
    • Also known as: Dawn
    • Genre: Historical
    • Episodes: 60
    • Broadcast network: MBC
    • Broadcast period: 2010-Mar-22 to 2010-Oct-12
    • Air time: Monday & Tuesday 21:55

    Synopsis

Set during the reign of King Sukjong in the Joseon dynasty, the story focuses on Dong Yi, a water maid who gains the trust of Queen Inhyeon and later the favour of the king when he is moved by her prayers for the health of the Queen during the court disputes caused by Jang Hee Bin. Dong Yi becomes a concubine with the rank of sook-bin and bears a son who will later become the 21st king of Joseon, Yeongjo.
Personal Comments: Dong Yi is one of those dramas I have mixed feeling for, on one hand I think it's great but on the other hand I get irritated by the characters so easily it hurts but I enjoyed getting annoyed by them. (what am I even saying....) Han Hyo Joo headlines the drama as the title character, she did pretty decent considering the fact that acting in a long saguek drama is mentally and physically tiring and a challenging but she manage to keep her acting stable throughout (she did nothing to really impress though) It's fun watching Dong Yi march her road to success and her growth as a character in the drama.

Months later, Eun Jae is back for revenge but she presumes the identity of another woman, Min So Hee, who had killed herself. How will Gyo Bin react to a girl who looks exactly like his presumed dead wife, Eun Jae? Will he be tempted by So Hee?
Personal Comments: A long and pain journey but I was addicted. The drama makes zero sense and irritated the shit out of me, but I was so into it, I basically marathoned through it. This is the kind of drama that makes you want to puch it in the face but still watch it till the very end. In other words, a guilty pleasure full of nonsense, maybe go on and try Yellow Boots instead? It's more logical and shorter.

Personal Comments: Well this show basically consist of ear dropping conversations happening everywhere, an unclear and stupid romance, basically the annoying aspects I've listed above have almost all been done in the drama. The fact that two major mage cute guys, Ji Chang Wook and Lee Jang Woo are in it doesn't save it from being a horrible drama. IN CONCLUSION, AVOID AT ALL COST AND GO WATCH THE TWO CUTIES IN OTHER DRAMAS. *HEALER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
